South Asian Games

The SAF Games came into existence as the power of sports was recognised as an essential too to strengthen the SAARC movement. It was felt that a sports organisation should be formed for countries located in South Asia similar to the South East Asian Games (SEA Games) which proved to be popular and was recognised by the Olympic Council of Asia. The concept was discussed by officials of the countries in South Asia in 1982 and later at a meeting in Bahrain in 1983. A decision was then taken regarding formation of the South Asia Sports Federation. The membership was limited to the eight countries in the region, namely India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. The idea and the games acquired a formal shape in 1984 when Kathmandu spruced itself to play host to the first SAF Games. Barring Afghanistan all the member-countries called upon its young sportsmen to show their sporting skills on this new platform. ...

The 2010 South Asian Games, officially the 11th South Asian Federation Games, is a major multi-sport event, scheduled to take place from January 29 to February 8, 2010 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This will be the third time that the Bangladeshi capital hosts the Games, thus becoming the 4th city to host the Games multiple times (after Colombo, Kathmandu and Islamabad). It is also expected to be the largest sporting event ever in the history of Bangladesh. Originally, the 11th South Asian Games were scheduled to take place in November 2009. However, the host country, Bangladesh, faced hurdles due to general elections,as a result South Asian Association Council (SAOC) held the 39th Executive Meeting and decided against hosting the Games in 2009,thus postponing the games to (early) 2010. A total of 8 countries will participate in the 2010 South Asian Games. There are 23 official sports for the 11th SAF Games. The 2006 South Asian Games (also known as 2006 SAF Games or 10th SAF Games) were held in Colombo, Srilanka from August 18 to August 28, 2006 in the Sugathadasa Stadium with more than 2000 sportspersons competing in the record 20 disciplines of Sports. The 10th edition of SAF Games also marked the debut for Afghanistan. Another highlight of 2006 SAF Games was unprecedented high levels of security for officials & players amid violent clashes between Srilankan Government's troops and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The Games originally scheduled to be held in 2005, had been postponed after a tsunami wave devastated the region. Islamabad hosted the 9th South Asia Federation Games from 29 March to 7 April, 2004 with a participation of approximately 2500 athletes and officials from eigth member countries together for 10 days of intense competitions in 15 sports. Afghanistan is first time included in these games. These games provided the countries of South Asia with an opportunity to go through a high level International Sports Competition and to raise the competitive level of all participants and contribute towards the development of the Olympic Movement. The inagural games took place in Kathmandu, in 1984 whereas the 4th edition of the games was also hosted by Pakistan in 1989. These games also provided an opportunity to the SAARC Countries to promote mutual understanding, harmony and friendship through sports forever. The Eight SAF Games was hosted for the second time in Kathmandu , Nepal from 25 September to 4 October 1999 . His Late Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev declared the games open amidst a grand ceremony. 1069 athletes of the different seven SAARC countries participated in the twelve sports including Athletics, Boxing, Football, Kabaddi, Karate, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Weight Lifting and Wrestling . In the final medal count, India took first position and taking the advantages of host country Nepal amazingly took second position followed by Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives . Out of 523 medals India had the lion's share of 102 gold, 58 silver and 37 bronze, Nepal took 31 gold, 10 silver and 24 bronze, Sri Lanka 16 gold 42 silver and 62 bronze, Pakistan 10 gold, 36 silver and 30 bronze, Bangladesh 2 gold, 10 silver and 35 bronze, Bhutan 1 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze, Maldives 4 bronze.
