10th South Asian Games - Colombo 2006
The 2006 South Asian Games (also known as 2006 SAF Games or 10th SAF Games) were held in Colombo, Srilanka from August 18 to August 28, 2006 in the Sugathadasa Stadium with more than 2000 sportspersons competing in the record 20 disciplines of Sports.
The 10th edition of SAF Games also marked the debut for Afghanistan.
Another highlight of 2006 SAF Games was unprecedented high levels of security for officials & players amid violent clashes between Srilankan Government's troops and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The Games originally scheduled to be held in 2005, had been postponed after a tsunami wave devastated the region.
Out of 708 medals India had the lion's share of 117 gold, 69 silver and 45 bronze, Pakistan took 41 gold, 43 silver and 72 bronze, Sri Lanka 37 gold 63 silver and 75 bronze, Nepal 9 gold, 14 silver and 30 bronze, Afghanistan 6 gold, 7 silver and 16 bronze, Bangladesh 3 gold, 15 silver and 32 bronze, Bhutan 3 silver and 10 bronze. Only Maldives did not won any medal.
The next SAF Games are scheduled to be held at Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2008.
